As a leading bike frame manufacturer for over four decades, Sunrise has built countless bicycles for its OEM business. This time, the company wanted to develop a whole new e-bike product line including 3 city bikes for men, women, and a step-through frame; as well as 2 mountain bikes for Cross-Country and Enduro, each designed with different geometry for its specific purpose.
It was crucial to develop a design language that built product identity and could be implemented over the whole e-bike family; furthermore, designers needed to create frames for these 5 different bicycle types using the same tube cross sections for a streamlined and cost-effective manufacturing process. Another challenging mission was to smartly integrate current powerful but large battery packs and the motor system into the frame without making it look bulky.
Our team came up with a thorough design strategy with elements that could be adopted across all 5 bicycle types and defined the family look by using sharp lines, negative space, edged surfaces, and solid linkages.
The patterns and 2-tone color scheme cleverly reduced visual thickness and made the rigid frames seemingly slimmer and more lightweight. Both the top and down tubes were designed to be consistent across all models for efficient hydroforming production, but at the same time, allowed for variations to serve for different usages.
